Anapana sati literally means breathing meditation, ana means inhalation and Apana breath. Breathing meditation leads quickly to focus the mind on one point or single mental object. At the end of this process you can achieve the mental state of deep inner eye that can lead, in turn, to the condition of Arahat and Bodhisattvas.
The Buddha practiced meditation on the breath for a long time before attaining enlightenment.

The best sit comfortably in the usual lotus position ...
Take some deep breaths. Then return to regular breathing. Do this three or four times. When inhaled extra remember not to use force. Mentally you can count, which does not interfere with the purity of meditation. You must always remember that a long exhalation is almost twice of its inspiration and so inhaling and exhaling, slowly, very slowly, we practice the concentration of light for the mind and body health.
After getting familiar with this type of meditation a person becomes aware that the so-called body can be deprived of everything but breathing.
Those who develop the inner eye, the condition will get deep Arahat or Bodhisattva.
